Aval / Sweet Poha / அவல்

Aval is a sweet snack made of 3 simple ingredients: poha, coconut, and jaggery. We make this regularly for religious occasions (Navaratri).

Poha is made by parboiling, rolling, flatting, and then drying rice. Poha is rich in carbohydrates, fiber, and iron. Similar to red rice and white rice, there is red poha and white poha. Red poha is not as processed as white poha, and thus is not stripped of its many nutrients.


Aval/Sweet Poha

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups Poha/Aval (அவல்)
  • cup Grated Coconut (தேங்காய்ப்பூ)
  • ½ – ¾ cup Jaggery (வெல்லம்) 
  • Salt (உப்பு)

Instructions
 

  • Wash the aval a few times. On the last rinse, add a pinch of salt and mix well. Then drain the water.
  • Squeeze the water out of the aval.
  • Add the grated coconut and mix well.
  • Add the jaggery and mix well. Add more jaggery and coconut as needed for a sweet taste.
  • Enjoy!
