Aadi Kool / ஆடிக்கூழ்

Aadi (July) Kool is made on the first day of July on the Tamil calendar. It’s typically celebrated by making kool and kozhukattai, serving it to the Gods, and then eating it with the family.

Depending on how you prefer your kool, you can add more mung beans and dough pieces than listed in the recipe below.


Aadi Kool

Ingredients
  

  • cup Roasted Mung Beans (பயறு)
  • 5 tbsp Roasted Black Gram Flour (உளுத்தம்மா)
  • 5 tbsp Roasted Rice Flour (அரிசி மா)
  • 5.5 cups Thin Coconut Milk (தேங்காய்ப்பால்)
  • 1 cup Thick Coconut Milk (தேங்காய்ப்பால்)
  • cup Coconut Pieces Shave the brown edges off and cut into small pieces
  • 1 ¼ cup Jaggery (வெல்லம்) 

Instructions
 

Flattened Dough Balls

  • Mix 1 tbsp black gram flour with 1 tbsp rice flour.
  • Add water slowly to get to the right consistency.
  • Make small flatten pieces from the dough.

Rice Mixture

  • Mix 1.5 cups thin coconut milk, 4 tbsp black gram flour, and 4 tbsp rice flour.

Kool

  • Roast mung beans for about 15 minutes on low flame or use roasted mung beans.
  • Cut coconut pieces into small pieces with the brown exterior removed.
  • Boil coconut milk, coconut pieces, and mung beans.
  • Once the mixture begins to boil, lower the heat just a little and cook until the beans are cooked.
  • After the beans are cooked, add the flatten dough balls a few at a time. Use a fork to mix the dough slowly to let them cook fully without getting squashed.
  • Add jaggery and cook until it completely melts.
  • Add the rice mixture and then reduce to low heat. This is to avoid the mixture becoming too thick.
  • About 2 minutes later, add the thick coconut milk.
  • Mix until there are light bubbles and then remove off the stove and enjoy!
