Rasam / இரசம்

Rasam is a spicy soup that can be eaten with rice or on its own. It’s great for cold days or when you’re feeling sick.

Rasam

Equipment

  • Ural (உரல்)/Mortar and Pestle

Ingredients
  

  • cup Coriander Seeds (மல்லி)
  • 7 Dried Red Chili Peppers (செத்தல் மிளகாய்)
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper (மிளகு)
  • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds (சின்னசீரகம்)
  • ¼ Medium Red Onion (வெங்காயம்)
  • 4 Garlic Cloves (பூண்டு)
  • 3.5 cups Water (தண்ணீர்)
  • 1 tsp Tamarind Concentrate (புளி)
  • 1 tsp Salt (உப்பு)
  • 5 Curry Leaves (கறிவேப்பிலை)

Instructions
 

  • Add coriander seeds and dried red chili pepper to ural and grind well.
  • Add black pepper and cumin seeds and grind well.
  • Add sliced onions and garlic and grind slightly.
  • Transfer mixture to a pot. Add water, tamarind concentrate, and salt. Cook on medium heat.
  • Once mixture boils, add more tamarind concentrate or salt to taste. When done, add curry leaves and remove pot off stove.
